Byrnes’ Eye View

After being delayed by weather, stuck in St. Louis overnight, Byrnes, the president of Byrnes Consulting, said the conference was a great opportunity to meet advisors, exhibitors and TD Ameritrade staff.

An Ethical Goodbye

Saturday morning, the conference ended with one CFP Board of Ethics course study, presented by a speaker that went from a criminal that embezzled money to a motivational speaker that turned his life around.

He shared his life story to describe how he made bad decisions so others can avoid doing the same. He highlighted eight critical thinking errors, which included entitlement, super optimism, rationalization, and affection disconnection.

Two Plus Fans

Ryan Shanks, the founder and CEO of Finetooth Consulting, and a panel moderator at the conference, posed for a picture with his wife and their baby on the way. They are seen here watching the Doobie Brothers.

Shanks’ tip for advisors transitioning the right way to the independent model was, “When leaving another organization, follow protocol. For example, use predetermined guidelines, like not soliciting your clients. Seek counsel, maybe a law firm or an organization like Market Counsel. Even if advisors can complete the due diligence on their own, they should ask if their time is better spent elsewhere and if this process is going to distract from client service responsibilities. Advisors need to figure out if they want to be a business owner or if they want to affiliate with a business owner.”

The Main Exhibit Hall

A bird’s eye view of the exhibit hall, on its last night, showed there was still a lot of advisor foot traffic. The largest booth was not a surprise – TD Ameritrade’s station, seen closest to the right.

Diamonds in the Rough

The crew from Putnam Investments, seen here, were hard at work throughout the conference. Putnam was one of two diamond level sponsors. T. Rowe Price was the other.

Best Idea to Drive Booth Traffic

Once again, the crew at John Hancock shined above the rest, by bringing in baseball legend Fred Lynn to take free pictures with those that visited the booth. Those that dropped off their business cards had a chance to win a signed baseball from the former major leaguer.

Here are four members of the John Hancock crew displaying their goods. Rumor has it basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton was at another booth, but the snow storm prevented me from getting to the conference in time to see him in action.

Best Giveaway

Although exhibitors had lots of great giveaways, my vote went to the Nationwide teddy bears. Not a bad thing to bring back to a kid at home or even regift for Valentine’s Day.

A close runner up was the RSS football, just in time for the Super Bowl parties post conference.
