Everyone hates taxes — but there's more to hate in some states than in others.

WalletHub recently ranked the states to determine which have the biggest tax burdens, comparing all 50 states based on the cost of three types of taxes — property taxes, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income in the state.

"It's easy to be dismayed at tax time when you see just how much of your income you lose," Cassandra Happe, a WalletHub analyst, said in a release. "Living in a state with a low tax burden can alleviate some of that stress. Some states charge no income tax or no sales tax, although all states have some form of property taxes and excise taxes."

The top state in the ranking has a total tax burden of 12%, with its residents paying 4.6% on income taxes, 4.4% on property taxes, and 3% in sales and excise taxes.
